The First KaDeWe in Vienna
Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) as Lead Architect
In collaboration with NMPB Architects
OMA’s proposes the first KaDeWe in Vienna in the form of an architectural device that juxtaposes two programs, a department store and hotel, in two separate volumes that seamlessly blend into the urban tissue of Vienna. It will be located at the corner of Mariahilfer Strasse and Karl-Schweighofer-Gasse, where the current Leiner building stands.
Multiple forms of public spaces, on the KaDeWe complex, are provided to further extend the existing public spaces of Mariahilfer Strasse and the Museumsquartier. It is done by offering a public passage from Karl-Schweighofer-Gasse between the two volumes, a new footpath from Karl-Schweighofer-Gasse towards the Museumsquartier, and a series of public accessible roof-gardens that offer a view of the city.
